How can learners explain their choices when refining an AI-generated game character?

How would you help adult learners evaluate an AI-generated game character rather than simply choosing the most detailed image? I am considering a small digital-literacy activity in which participants create a fictional character for a simple game and explain the editing decisions they make. This is a proposed activity, not a report of a classroom trial.
One possible sequence is to write a short brief: character role, intended display size, two main colors and a recognizable silhouette. Learners could compare a generated starting point with a manually refined version, then view both at their actual game size. The discussion would focus on readability, unwanted pixels, consistent direction views and whether extra detail helps or distracts.
Sprite Maker at spritemaker.app/ combines AI sprite generation with pixel editing, character direction views, NPC sets and transparent PNG export. I am associated with promoting this project, and this question was prepared with AI assistance; it is not an independent endorsement or a claim that the tool improves learning outcomes. A paper grid or an existing drawing tool could support the same discussion when account access or connectivity is unsuitable.
For a safe exercise, I would use invented characters rather than learners photos or recognizable real people. Participants should keep their original version, note any references they are permitted to use, and distinguish a direction-view set from a finished animation. No one should need to publish a personal profile or share private images to take part.
What assessment criteria would you prioritize: explaining the design brief, identifying inconsistent details, documenting a revision, or checking the exported image against different backgrounds? Would asking a partner to identify the characters role at native size make a useful peer-review step? I would welcome suggestions for keeping the activity focused on reasoning and creative choices rather than on producing the most polished picture.
