How can learners distinguish a useful screenshot correction from a misleading alteration?

For an adult digital-literacy activity, how would you help learners evaluate a small text change in a screenshot without suggesting that a polished image is proof of a real event?

A proposed exercise is to use a fictional interface containing no personal details. Give each pair an untouched source and a clearly labeled edited copy, then ask them to compare the requested wording, nearby elements and explanation of the change. One person checks the words and numbers; the other checks whether the image could be misunderstood outside its original context. They switch roles before agreeing on a caption. This is a suggested activity, not a report of a classroom experiment.

For illustration, AI Image Text Editor at image-text-editor.online/ accepts JPG, PNG and WebP images and lets users select text regions and describe a replacement. Its homepage describes up to eight selections and images up to 10 MB. New users can start with free credits; edits consume credits. The AI uses surrounding lettering and background as references, so generated spelling and nearby detail need review. This is a project-associated, AI-assisted post rather than an independent product test.

The learning goal would be judgment, not making changes undetectable. Learners should explain when a fresh screenshot from the source is better, why the original should be preserved, and why visual text replacement is not secure redaction. Only authorized, synthetic examples should be used; no real conversations, student records, grades or sensitive uploads.

What assessment criteria would you use? Would a short change note plus an edited-example caption be enough, or should learners also demonstrate how a cropped or forwarded image can lose its context? I would welcome a practical rubric that rewards accurate wording, clear disclosure and respect for privacy rather than visual realism alone.
