How can an adult avatar-design activity assess critical thinking rather than polished AI output?

How would you assess critical thinking in a short adult-learning activity about avatar clothing design, rather than rewarding the most polished AI image?

One possible activity is to give consenting adult participants the same non-personal design brief and ask them to explain three decisions: why they chose a garment format, what they changed after comparing the flat layout with an R6 preview, and what they would check before exporting. Participation would be optional, with an ordinary image-editor alternative. No student photos, real names, new game accounts or purchases would be required.

A project-associated example is rbxshirtmaker.com/ . The browser studio combines templates, PNG imports, direct editing, optional AI generation and previews. Classic shirts and pants export 585 × 559 PNGs with different garment regions; graphic T-shirts export transparent 512 × 512 graphics. Editing and export are free, while AI operations use account credits. A preview is not proof of perfect fit, rights clearance or Roblox approval, and publishing to Roblox is separate.

For assessment, I would focus on an explanation of image rights and privacy, the reason for a layout revision, the distinction between an editable project backup and a final PNG, and recognition of the tool's limits. An attractive result alone would not demonstrate those decisions. Learners could describe a problem they found rather than claim that every design was successful.

This is a proposed discussion, not a tested classroom intervention or an independent product review. The wording is AI-assisted and the project association is disclosed. What evidence would make a simple rubric fair to participants using different tools, including those who choose not to use AI?
