How can a personal digital letter help adults practise specific, thoughtful writing?

When teaching reflective writing, how do you help adult learners move beyond general compliments and describe a meaningful moment? A short personal letter can be a useful exercise because it has a real reader and a clear purpose.
One approach is to ask the writer to choose a small memory, explain why it mattered, and finish with a realistic wish or invitation. The first draft should use familiar words rather than impressive phrases. Reading it aloud can reveal sentences that sound unlike the writer. Photos or music can be added later, but the message should remain understandable without them.
For an optional digital format, Digital Love Letter offers a virtual love letter editor with text, photos, music and an opening-envelope preview: digitalloveletter.online/ . It allows writing your own message or revising an optional AI draft. Writing and preview are free; sharing options may require a separate unlock. I would treat AI suggestions as material to revise, not a source of invented memories.
Privacy is also part of the exercise: avoid sharing private conversations, addresses or photos of others without permission. Learners should be free to use a fictional practice recipient rather than disclose a personal relationship to a class.
Which prompts help people write with more detail and care? Do you prefer a memory-based opening, a thank-you note, or a simple question about what the recipient means to the writer?
