How would you teach students to judge a reusable color grade rather than just a filter?

When students make short classroom videos, a color preset can make a sequence feel consistent, but it can also hide problems with exposure or white balance. What practical exercise would you use to help learners tell the difference between a useful color grade and a look that only works on one attractive frame?

One approach is to start with three SDR frames: an indoor scene, a daylight scene, and a close-up with skin tones. Keep unedited copies, choose a reference image, and compare the same adjustment across all three. Ask students to describe the change in shadows, highlights, saturation, and skin tones before they decide whether they like it. A reference should communicate the desired mood, not become a promise that every source image will match perfectly.

For the technical part, LUT Generator at ailutgenerator.online/ can match a source photo or SDR video frame to a reference image, allow color refinement, and export a reusable .cube LUT. Optional AI assistance suggests adjustments. The educational value is in comparing the result with the starting frame and explaining the trade-offs, not treating an automatic suggestion as a correct answer.

A .cube file describes a color transformation; it does not fix poor lighting, recover clipped highlights, or replace shot-by-shot exposure work. I would have students apply a modest version of the look, check it on another scene, and write a short explanation of what stayed consistent and what still needed manual correction.

Would you assess this kind of activity through a before-and-after storyboard, peer feedback, or a short reflective explanation? Which criteria keep attention on observation and reasoning rather than simply choosing the most dramatic filter?
